So, news is out that Emmerich and Devlin have been signed up by MGM and Warner Bros. to reboot STARGATE! They're planning a trilogy of movies (which they've always said that STARGATE was meant to be).

How do you feel about this news? Who do you think should portray Jack and Daniel? Let's talk!

I'm torn. I loved the idea of STARGATE, but I'm very much attached to the television franchise. And STARGATE isn't STARGATE without Jack and Daniel.

I guess they're looking for a new audience, like what was done for STAR TREK, but at least in STAR TREK, they kept the old universe in place (its events did happen and are remembered by our original Spock).

As far as a reboot is concerned, it will be aimed at a different audience, so I'm not even sure they'll have the same characters (Jack and Daniel) or if they'll mix it up and have one of the main characters be a woman. Maybe Jack and Daniel will exist, but it will have been over 20 years since the Stargate's opening and there are teams, but the Goa'uld don't exist (and, by association, neither do the Jaffa!).

It would be interesting if the trilogy took ideas from the television series, though -- preserving things like the Dial Home Device and the builders of the Stargates like the Ancients.

I feel like they are going to have to snag some things from the tv series - the film just doesn't have enough mythology to stand on its own for a trilogy. So they'll incorporate the obvious stuff. And really, it wouldn't be as good without those elements.

"or if they'll mix it up and have one of the main characters be a woman"
the only thing that will make me want to see this movie is if they have TWO female characters. I'm bored sick of the token woman trope. Sam Carter was friggen awesome (as was the plethora of badass women in the SG series), but if they do a film version I know they are going to take all that away and make it a boys club.
